The Future of Fixing

Fixing Homes—Building Futures

The high school counselor, meaning well enough, told Annie she'd make a great Administrative Assistant because she was always organized and on time, but Annie took the basic, flat advice as a sign that the counselor didn't really see her for all she was. Annie knew she was more.

As a child, she loved to learn and tinker - always at the heels of her grandfather, finding ways to help him around the farm. He patiently showed her how to change out the rotten porch railing or take her along to the old hardware store on Main Street to find a new hose bib that needed replacing. Once, he even took her up on the roof to fix a couple of loose bricks on the chimney, which Grandma hollered up that it was too dangerous for a young girl, but Grandpa just winked at Annie and said, "Do everything with thought and care, and you'll be just fine."

So when the opportunity came up for her to take a different route than her other classmates, she felt pride - pride and confidence and purpose, and this told her she was right where she was supposed to be.
